Gray's Lily
The rare Gray Lily, named after botanist Asa Gray, is considered by some to be one of the most beautiful wild flowers in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The redish orange bell shaped flower is 2 - 3" long and hangs from the end of a 2 - 5' stem. The lanced-shaped leaves are arranged in several whorls along the stem. This endangered species grows in meadows and balds at elevations above 4000' and will usually bloom in June or July. This photo was taken in June in the Linn Cove vicinity of BRP.
