Yellow Fringe Orchid
The Yellow Fringe Orchid has numerous clusters of small fringed flowers, either yellow or orange, growing on the top of a 1 - 3' tall stem. Plants normally do not bloom every year. They may be found in small groups along roadways, open woods, and fairly dry mountain sides in an acid soil environment at elevations of 2000 - 4000'. Normal blooming time is July and August. This photograph was made in August at mile 312 (BRP). You may also find this plant on Balsam Mountain Road (BRP), and Rich Mountain Road out of Cades Cove (GSM).
